Egypt's Remarkable Comeback

In a thrilling encounter at BC Place in Vancouver, Egypt showcased a powerful second-half performance to overturn a deficit and triumph over New Zealand 3-1 in their Group G match at the FIFA World Cup 2026. This victory marks Egypt's inaugural win in World Cup history and brings them closer to advancing to the Round of 32.

New Zealand Takes Early Lead

New Zealand began the match with vigor, appearing more threatening in the early minutes. The All Whites created their first significant chance in the seventh minute when Liberato Cacace found Sarpreet Singh at the edge of the box, but Singh's shot went wide.

Shortly after, Marko Stamenic set up Elijah Just inside the penalty area, but Egyptian goalkeeper Oufa Shobeir made a crucial save at his near post.

The pressure from New Zealand eventually resulted in a goal from a corner kick. Tim Payne sent in a well-placed cross, and defender Finn Surman outjumped the Egyptian defense to score with a powerful header, giving New Zealand a well-deserved lead.

Egypt's Second Half Dominance

Egypt struggled initially but began to find their footing as the first half progressed. Omar Marmoush forced New Zealand's Max Crocombe into action with a long-range shot, while Mohamed Salah narrowly missed with a free-kick.

After halftime, New Zealand almost extended their lead when Callum McCowatt's header was brilliantly tipped over the bar by Shobeir.

This moment proved pivotal as Egypt returned to the field with renewed energy. They equalized just before the hour mark when Mohamed Hany delivered a precise cross, allowing Mostafa Ziko to score with a close-range header.

With the momentum shifting, Egypt took the lead less than ten minutes later. Ziko and Salah combined effectively in the penalty area, with Salah finishing expertly to put Egypt ahead.

Egypt continued to press and secured their victory in the 82nd minute. Salah's corner found substitute Trezeguet, who headed the ball into the net, completing a remarkable comeback.

Group G Standings

This win extends Egypt's unbeaten streak against New Zealand to four matches and positions them favorably as they prepare for their final group match against Iran. Conversely, New Zealand must secure a victory against Belgium in their last Group G encounter to maintain their hopes of qualification.
