Drone Crash in Romania Causes Explosion and Fire in Apartment Building
Drone Incident in Galați
In the early hours of Friday, a drone collided with a residential building in Galați, Romania, leading to an explosion and subsequent fire that necessitated a significant emergency response. Local emergency services reported that the drone impacted the apartment complex around 2 AM, igniting a fire in a unit on the 10th floor.
Two occupants of the affected apartment were able to evacuate themselves before the arrival of emergency personnel. They sustained minor injuries and received on-site medical assistance. The Galați Emergency Situations Inspectorate (ISU) confirmed that the fire has been extinguished and that no further drones have been detected in the vicinity.
Following the incident, authorities issued a RO-ALERT warning to local residents. The ISU Galați stated, “Earlier today, a drone crashed into a residential block, resulting in an explosion and a fire in a 10th-floor apartment.” Emergency teams from ISU, SMURD, the County Ambulance Service, and police were dispatched to secure the area and mitigate the incident's impact.
Additionally, a specialized investigation team focusing on explosions is en route to the site, comprising officers from the Criminal Investigation Department and experts from the National Institute of Forensics within the Romanian Police. Romania’s intelligence and security agencies are also participating in the response.
Initial reports indicated that the drone might be of Russian origin, but officials have yet to verify the aircraft's source. Investigations into the crash are ongoing. This incident raises alarms amid heightened concerns regarding increased Russian drone activity near Romania's border with Ukraine, which spans approximately 400 miles and is situated near the Black Sea and Danube River, areas frequently targeted by Russian drone and missile strikes.
Data from Romania’s Defense Ministry reveals a rise in Russian attacks near NATO's borders in recent months, leading to more frequent NATO air policing missions, repeated incursions into allied airspace by Russian drones, and the recovery of munition fragments on Romanian soil.
