Drone Attack Disrupts Oil Operations at Fujairah Port in UAE
Fujairah Port Faces Operational Halt
The Abu Dhabi National Oil Company (ADNOC) has been compelled to halt crude loading operations at the Fujairah port in the United Arab Emirates following a drone strike that ignited fires at this vital export terminal on Monday. This incident marks the second disruption at the port within a mere three days, underscoring the increasing threats to Gulf energy infrastructure amid the intensifying conflict with Iran. Just after oil shipments had resumed following a previous drone attack that caused a fire over the weekend, three separate blazes were reported in Fujairah's oil industrial area, as confirmed by two sources, including a witness. Civil defense teams are currently engaged in efforts to extinguish the fires, according to a statement from the Fujairah government media office, which noted that no injuries have been reported. However, there was no mention regarding the status of oil loading operations.
Importance of Fujairah Terminal
Why is Fujairah Terminal significant?
Fujairah, situated on the Gulf of Oman just outside the Strait of Hormuz, serves as a crucial exit point for approximately 1 million barrels per day of the UAE's Murban crude, representing about 1% of global oil demand. This port is one of the most strategically vital energy hubs in the Middle East. Its location on the eastern coast of the UAE allows it to function as an essential export route during times of instability in the Gulf region. The facility is connected to Abu Dhabi’s oil fields via a major pipeline, enabling the UAE to export crude oil and petroleum products without depending on tanker routes that traverse the Strait of Hormuz. Recent reports indicate that the UAE's daily oil production has plummeted by over 50% due to the ongoing conflict with Iran and the effective closure of the Strait, prompting ADNOC to implement extensive production shut-ins.
Iran has already restricted shipping through the Strait of Hormuz, a narrow passage that typically handles about 20% of the world's oil supply. The drone strikes targeting Fujairah occur amidst escalating instability in the Middle East, with energy infrastructure increasingly becoming a target in the ongoing conflict. As the situation enters its 16th day, the United Arab Emirates has expressed serious concerns over the rising tensions while assuring that Dubai remains stable, operational, and open for business despite the Iranian drone and missile threats.
