Dramatic Drone Strike on Russian Oil Refinery Captured on Video
Ukrainian Drone Attack on Moscow's Oil Facility
On Thursday, a recent drone strike by Ukraine targeting Russia was recorded, showcasing intense explosions and flames engulfing a significant oil refinery near Moscow. The footage, released by Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy, begins with thick black smoke rising into the atmosphere, captured from a moving vehicle. As the camera approaches the site, towering columns of smoke become visible above the refinery.
Impact on Storage Tank
One segment of the video, filmed from a higher position, seemingly captures the moment a storage tank is hit. The force of the impact sends the tank's lid soaring into the air, accompanied by a burst of smoke and debris. Additional clips reveal multiple fires raging throughout the extensive refinery complex, with dark smoke continuing to billow over the area. This particular fuel facility had reportedly faced an attack earlier in the week.
Significant Drone Assault on Moscow
Russian authorities characterized this incident as one of the most substantial drone assaults on Moscow in recent years. Moscow's Mayor, Sergei Sobyanin, indicated that air defense systems intercepted numerous incoming drones, although some still managed to reach the oil refinery. According to Russia's defense ministry, as reported by various sources, over 500 Ukrainian drones were intercepted overnight across the nation, with nearly 200 aimed at Moscow. In response, authorities temporarily restricted operations at Moscow airports, while debris from downed drones caused damage to residential and commercial structures in the capital.
Zelenskyy's Justification for the Attack
President Zelenskyy stated that this operation was a response to Russia's ongoing assaults on Ukrainian cities. He remarked, "This is a fully justified response to Russian attacks on our cities and communities and another significant outcome of our warriors' efforts against facilities that support Russia's war machine," on social media. He noted that Ukrainian security and defense agencies coordinated the operation, which also targeted sites in the Rostov region and areas occupied by Russia. "Recently, all our partners have acknowledged the precision and effectiveness of our mid-range strikes and long-range sanctions. It is time for the war to conclude, and Russia must engage in necessary diplomatic actions," Zelenskyy added. This latest exchange occurred as Russia initiated new missile and drone strikes across Ukraine, with Ukrainian officials reporting attacks on Kyiv and other regions, triggering air raid alerts nationwide. The drone strike coincided with Russian President Vladimir Putin's upcoming summit with Southeast Asian leaders in Kazan. More than four years after Russia's full-scale invasion of Ukraine in 2022, the conflict has increasingly extended beyond the front lines, with both sides employing long-range drones to target critical infrastructure deep within enemy territory.
