DR Congo Football Team Faces Strict Health Protocols Ahead of FIFA World Cup 2026

The DR Congo national football team faces strict health protocols, including a mandatory 21-day isolation in Belgium, to participate in the FIFA World Cup 2026. This measure is in response to a serious Ebola outbreak in the country, which has resulted in over 130 deaths and more than 600 infections. The US government has made it clear that adherence to these health guidelines is non-negotiable for the team's entry into the United States. As the World Cup approaches, the focus remains on preventing the spread of the virus among the millions expected to attend the event.

Mandatory Isolation for DR Congo Team

The national football team of the Democratic Republic of Congo (DR Congo) is under a stringent requirement to participate in the FIFA World Cup 2026 in the USA. They must undergo a 21-day isolation period in Belgium due to a significant Ebola outbreak in Africa. Andrew Giuliani, who serves as the Executive Director of the World Cup task force at the White House, confirmed that these measures are being implemented to ensure the safety of all involved. He emphasized that failure to adhere to health protocols would result in the team being barred from entering the United States. The primary objective is to prevent the spread of Ebola, especially with millions expected to attend the World Cup.

Clear Warning to the Congolese Team

Giuliani articulated the US government's stance unequivocally. He stated, 'We have made it very clear to the Congolese that they have to be in a bubble for 21 days before they come here on June 11th in Houston.' This requirement is non-negotiable for their entry. He further explained, 'We've told the Congolese government that they have to be in a bubble, or they're not coming. We can't be any clearer than that.' The focus remains on ensuring that the infection does not spread in the US during the World Cup.

Ebola Outbreak Claims Lives in Congo

The Ebola situation in Congo is alarming, with the government reporting that a rare strain has led to at least 130 fatalities this month alone. The total number of infections has surpassed 600, marking the outbreak as an epidemic. Currently, it remains unclear whether any players from the Congolese team have contracted the virus. Nevertheless, the US authorities are exercising extreme caution and may restrict entry to individuals from Congo, allowing only players, coaches, support staff, and officials during the World Cup.
