Devastating Earthquakes Hit Venezuela, Causing Major Destruction
Severe Earthquakes Shake Venezuela
On Wednesday evening, Venezuela experienced two significant earthquakes off its coast, measuring 7.2 and 7.5 in magnitude. These seismic events resulted in extensive destruction, with buildings collapsing and residents fleeing into the streets in panic. The tremors were felt as far away as Brazil's Amazon, approximately 1,700 kilometers (1,050 miles) from the epicenter.
The U.S. Geological Survey (USGS) provided an initial assessment indicating a 40% likelihood that the death toll could reach 10,000, with a 36% chance of exceeding 100,000 casualties, according to reports. In a national address, acting President Delcy Rodriguez acknowledged the widespread damage across various states but did not disclose specific numbers regarding injuries or fatalities. She noted that Simon Bolivar International Airport, the main airport in the country, sustained significant damage, leading to its closure, and announced the cancellation of classes for several days.
Rodriguez urged citizens to remain calm and emphasized the importance of unity during this crisis. She declared a state of emergency and called upon healthcare professionals to report to hospitals to assist the injured. The USGS initially recorded the first earthquake at a magnitude of 7.1, later adjusting it to 7.2, with its epicenter located west of Moron, a community along the Caribbean coast, about 168 kilometers (104 miles) from Caracas, at a depth of 22 kilometers. Just a minute later, a second earthquake of 7.5 magnitude struck, with a depth of 10 kilometers and its epicenter situated 16 kilometers (10 miles) southwest of Moron.
These earthquakes are among the most powerful to hit Venezuela in over a century, occurring shortly after 6 PM. In the capital, Caracas, people evacuated buildings that were swaying, visibly shaken by the sight of collapsed walls revealing furniture from the street. Dust clouds were observed in two neighborhoods, typically bustling with restaurants and businesses.
