Democratic Congressman Al Green Removed During Trump's State of the Union Address
Al Green's Protest at the State of the Union
During President Donald Trump’s State of the Union address on Tuesday, Democratic Congressman Al Green was escorted out early in the proceedings. The Texas representative stood prominently in the aisle, holding a sign that stated, “BLACK PEOPLE AREN’T APES!” as Trump made his entrance. House Majority Leader Steve Scalise was observed attempting to swipe the sign from Green as he walked in with the president.
The sign referenced a racist image of former President Barack Obama and former First Lady Michelle Obama that Trump had shared on his Truth Social account earlier this month. Green, who has been vocal about his desire to impeach Trump, stood defiantly at the beginning of the address while most other lawmakers took their seats. He was subsequently removed from the chamber by House staff, as GOP members and Trump supporters chanted “USA, USA” during his exit.
This incident quickly gained traction on social media, marking the second time Green has been removed during a presidential address to Congress. He was previously escorted out last year for interrupting Trump while waving his cane.
