Couple Climbs Empire State Building, Unfurls Love Message
Daring Climb at Iconic Landmark
On Wednesday, two individuals ascended the antenna of New York City's Empire State Building, displaying a banner that read, "when the power of love beats the love of power the world knows peace." The climbers, reportedly a man and a woman dressed in dark attire, were spotted near the top of the building's 1,454-foot antenna. Reports suggest that Angela Nikolau and her partner Ivan Beerkus are the climbers, although official confirmation from authorities is still pending. The phrase on the banner is a variation of a quote often linked to guitarist Jimi Hendrix, but it was originally articulated by William Gladstone, a British Prime Minister from the 19th century. Video footage captured the climbers at the summit for approximately 30 minutes before they made their way down to a platform at the antenna's base. During this event, the observation deck of the building was reportedly evacuated.

As they reached the platform, the man appeared to kneel and present a small object to the woman, which seemed to be an engagement ring. The couple then shared an embrace and a kiss. It remains unclear how they accessed the antenna or managed to reach the top of the building. Authorities have yet to disclose their identities or indicate if any charges will be brought against them. This incident is reminiscent of past events; in 1994, Alain Robert, known as the "French Spider-Man," climbed the Empire State Building using only his hands and feet before being apprehended by the New York Police Department.
