Could Islamabad Host a New Round of US-Iran Talks? Trump Hints at Possibilities
Potential Talks in Islamabad
Washington: President Donald Trump indicated that discussions with Iran might resume in Islamabad within the next couple of days, as reported by a US media outlet on Tuesday.
Trump suggested to The New York Post, "You should stay there, really, because something could be happening over the next two days, and we’re more inclined to go there."
He credited the potential for renewed talks to the effective leadership of Pakistan Army chief Field Marshal Asim Munir, stating, "It’s more likely, you know why? Because the field marshal is doing a great job."
According to Fox News, the US's recent blockade of Iranian ports has been a significant factor prompting Tehran to reconsider negotiations.
An unnamed US official mentioned, "A lot is happening today and tomorrow. We have all the ingredients of a deal, but it’s not all there yet."
US Central Command (CENTCOM) reported that it successfully implemented a blockade on all vessels traveling to and from Iranian ports within the first 24 hours.
CENTCOM emphasized that the blockade is being enforced fairly against ships from all nations entering and exiting Iranian waters.
They noted that six merchant vessels complied with US directives to turn back.
Over 10,000 US service members are involved in the blockade, which includes more than 100 aircraft and 18 warships.
CENTCOM also stated that US forces are ensuring freedom of navigation for vessels passing through the Strait of Hormuz to and from non-Iranian ports.
Despite efforts, the US and Iran could not finalize an agreement during the lengthy 21-hour peace talks in Islamabad over the weekend, with Washington asserting that Tehran was unwilling to relinquish its nuclear enrichment rights.
