Incident Overview

A video depicting a police arrest in Daytona Beach has ignited significant debate on social media, showcasing an officer repeatedly striking a suspect in the face. Derrick Henry, the mayor of Daytona Beach, publicly addressed the footage, labeling it as concerning and emphasizing the community's right to clear explanations regarding the event. Following the video's release, Henry reached out to the police leadership of the city.

According to reports, Jakari Young, the chief of the Daytona Beach Police Department, is informed about the situation. Mayor Henry indicated that measures are already underway to assess the officer's conduct.

Details from the Video

Subsequently, police shared a segment of the officer's body camera footage. This clip captures an officer confronting a man holding a drink in public, instructing him to dispose of it or face arrest for violating open container laws. The man retorted, suggesting the officer pour it out himself. The officer complied, pouring out the drink before forcefully taking the man to the ground, where he was subsequently handcuffed.

While being placed near the patrol vehicle, the suspect continued to provoke the officers, claiming, 'I almost took you out, didn’t I?' The footage then shows the officer again taking the suspect down, leading to a struggle where the suspect grabbed the officer's wrist. The officer responded by striking the man multiple times.

Official Responses

Chief Young announced that the officer involved has been reassigned to an administrative role while the department conducts a thorough review of the incident. This evaluation will ascertain if the officer's actions adhered to departmental protocols. Young emphasized the expectation for officers to maintain professionalism and sound judgment in all public interactions.

The case has been forwarded to the Office of Professional Standards for a comprehensive review. This incident follows a recent altercation between Mayor Henry and local law enforcement, where he expressed concerns regarding a traffic stop involving his wife, Stephanie Pasley-Henry. Henry criticized the stop as unnecessary and highlighted issues of over-policing in minority communities.

In response, Chief Young clarified that two officers were engaged in a training exercise, and a nearby deputy had briefly intervened. The police chief stated that the traffic stop was reviewed and found compliant with department policies, noting community complaints about speeding that warranted increased patrols.

Sheriff Mike Chitwood later released body camera footage from the traffic stop, which showed officers explaining their rationale for stopping Pasley-Henry due to her crossing a lane line after leaving a parking lot. Although officers conducted a sobriety test based on her behavior, she passed and was let go with a warning. Sheriff Chitwood expressed his support for Chief Young and the Daytona Beach Police Department as the investigation into the arrest video continues.
