SHIMLA – The Congress party has made a significant political move by selecting Anurag Sharma as its candidate for the sole Rajya Sabha seat from Himachal Pradesh. While the party portrays this as a recognition of his grassroots efforts, many view it as a strategic decision to navigate the political landscape ahead of the 2024 elections.

Sharma, who currently leads the Kangra District Congress Committee (DCC), has caught many political analysts off guard with this nomination. Previously, prominent figures like former Union minister Anand Sharma and state Congress chief Pratibha Singh were considered frontrunners for the position. By choosing a district-level leader over established politicians, the Congress seems to be emphasizing the importance of organizational work and regional political dynamics.

The connection to Sudhir Sharma is noteworthy, as Anurag Sharma was once aligned with the former Congress leader who later defected to the BJP. Their relationship has reportedly changed over the years, especially following Sudhir Sharma's controversial actions during the 2024 Rajya Sabha elections, which created a clear divide between him and Chief Minister Sukhvinder Singh Sukhu. Anurag Sharma's rise is interpreted by some as a message from Sukhu to Sudhir Sharma, indicating that former allies are now part of Sukhu's inner circle.

Kangra district holds significant political weight in Himachal Pradesh, housing 15 of the state's 68 Assembly constituencies. For any party aiming for dominance in the state, a robust organizational presence in Kangra is essential.

By selecting a candidate from Bir in the Baijnath constituency, the Congress is not only strengthening its political outreach in Kangra but also signaling to party members that grassroots efforts can lead to greater opportunities.

In addition to his political career, Anurag Sharma has a background in business, having worked as a government contractor since 2003. His election affidavit reveals that he has secured contracts worth approximately ₹16 crore in Kangra from September 2024 to February 2026. He is also involved in the adventure tourism sector, serving as president of the Billing Paragliding Association, which manages activities at Bir-Billing, a renowned paragliding destination.

Given that the Congress holds a solid majority in the 68-member Himachal Pradesh Assembly and the BJP has opted not to contest the Rajya Sabha seat, Anurag Sharma's election to Parliament seems highly likely.

Whether this nomination serves as a reward for loyalty, a means to enhance Kangra's representation, or a strategic maneuver to reshape regional dynamics will unfold in the coming months. For now, Sharma's transition from local politics to the national arena signifies a pivotal moment in the evolving political scene of Himachal Pradesh.
