China Takes Action Against India at WTO Over Tariffs and Subsidies

In a significant move, China has filed a petition with the World Trade Organization (WTO) challenging India's tariffs on information and communication technology products and subsidies in the solar sector. The Chinese government claims that these measures violate WTO obligations and provide unfair advantages to Indian industries. This is the second petition China has submitted against India this year, following earlier concerns regarding subsidies for electric vehicles. The situation highlights ongoing trade tensions between the two nations and raises questions about compliance with international trade rules.

China's WTO Petition Against India

Beijing: On Friday, China lodged a formal complaint with the World Trade Organization (WTO), seeking discussions with India regarding its tariffs on information and communication technology (ICT) products and subsidies in the solar sector.

According to a statement from the Ministry of Commerce, China's complaint asserts that India's actions breach several WTO obligations, particularly the principle of national treatment, and involve import substitution subsidies that are explicitly banned under WTO regulations.

The statement emphasized that these measures provide unfair advantages to Indian domestic industries while negatively impacting China's interests.

China has called on India to adhere to its WTO commitments and to make necessary adjustments to these policies.

This marks the second time this year that China has filed a petition against India at the WTO.

Earlier in October, China raised concerns about India's subsidies for electric vehicles and batteries, requesting consultations to address these issues, which it claims are detrimental to its interests.
