China Calls for Immediate Ceasefire in West Asia Amid Rising Tensions

In a recent statement, China has called for an immediate halt to military operations in West Asia, following escalating tensions in the Strait of Hormuz. This appeal comes after US President Trump urged nations, including China, to help secure shipping routes in the region. The closure of this vital waterway by Iran in response to US and Israeli airstrikes has disrupted global energy supplies, leading to a spike in oil prices. As discussions continue between China and the US regarding diplomatic engagements, the situation remains critical for international trade and regional stability.

China's Urgent Appeal for Peace

On Monday, China urged all parties involved to cease military actions in West Asia following a call from US President Donald Trump for nations, including China, to assist in safeguarding shipping routes through the Strait of Hormuz. This request arose after Iran effectively shut down this crucial waterway in retaliation to airstrikes conducted by the United States and Israel. The closure has significantly impacted global energy supplies and trade, leading to a notable surge in oil prices.

Lin Jian, spokesperson for the Chinese Foreign Ministry, stated that the ongoing tensions in the Strait of Hormuz and surrounding areas have disrupted the movement of goods and energy, jeopardizing regional peace and global stability. He emphasized, “China urges all parties to halt military operations immediately to prevent further escalation and mitigate adverse effects on global economic growth,” during a press briefing in Beijing.

President Trump has called upon several nations, including China, the UK, France, and Japan, to send naval forces to ensure the strait remains open and secure for international shipping. In an interview with a financial publication, Trump highlighted China's significant dependence on oil from West Asia, suggesting that it should join a coalition aimed at restoring tanker traffic through the strait. He also indicated that he might postpone a scheduled visit to Beijing later this month based on China's response to this proposal.

Lin mentioned that China and the United States are in discussions regarding the potential visit, noting that interactions between national leaders are crucial for managing the relationship between the two nations. China has vocally condemned the recent strikes by the US and Israel on Iran, maintaining strong ties with Tehran and being a key purchaser of Iranian oil.
