Bhutan Queen Mother Honored with Humanitarian Award in Kokrajhar

Kokrajhar, Feb 3: As India and Bhutan strengthen their ties in various sectors, including trade and connectivity, the prestigious Upendra Nath Brahma ‘Soldier of Humanity’ Award for 2025 was presented to Gyalyum Ashi Dorji Wangmo Wangchuck, the Queen Mother of Bhutan, on Tuesday.
The award ceremony took place at the Jwhwlao Nileswar Brahma Auditorium, located within Bodoland University, where Assam's Governor, Lakshman Prasad Acharya, had the honor of presenting the award.
This accolade recognizes the Queen Mother's lifelong dedication to humanitarian efforts, cultural preservation, women's empowerment, and her exemplary leadership.
Governor Acharya emphasized that the event symbolizes a shared commitment to human dignity, compassion, and social justice, expressing his privilege in welcoming the Queen Mother on behalf of Assam's citizens.
In her acceptance speech, Gyalyum Ashi Dorji Wangmo Wangchuck highlighted the lasting friendship between Bhutan and Assam, noting the importance of culture in fostering human connections.
She remarked, “High-level exchanges, such as the anticipated visit of the Assam Chief Minister in 2024, remind us that friendships, when nurtured with care, blossom into trust and meaningful collaboration.”
The Queen Mother also shared insights into Bhutan's future aspirations, particularly the Gelephu Mindfulness City initiative.
“This city is envisioned as a sacred space where economic vitality harmonizes with spiritual balance, where green innovation flourishes alongside enduring values, and where our youth can chase their dreams,” she stated, adding that the heritage of the Bodo people and Bhutan's ethos would converge to promote sustainable prosperity and lasting friendship.
During the ceremony, Hagrama Mohilary, chief of the Bodoland Territorial Council (BTC), remarked that the award transcends mere recognition, serving as a reminder of society's duty towards human welfare.
“This award is more than an honour. It reminds us of our collective responsibility and commitment to humanity,” he noted, highlighting the deep historical ties between Bodoland and Bhutan, rooted in shared rivers, culture, and mutual respect.
The event was graced by numerous dignitaries, including Gelephu Mindfulness City Governor Dasho Dr Lotay Tshering, Assam's Handloom and Textiles Minister U.G. Brahma, and former BTC Chief Executive Member Pramod Boro, among others.
