Dhaka: Mohammed Shahabuddin, the President of Bangladesh and a former supporter of ousted Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina, announced his resignation on Friday, stepping down two years prior to the conclusion of his term.

The 76-year-old leader cited health issues as the reason for his departure, as reported by The Daily Star.

A spokesperson from Bangabhaban, the presidential residence, confirmed that Shahabuddin's representatives have delivered his resignation letter to the parliament.

This letter will be presented to Speaker Hafizuddin Ahmed, who will assume the role of Acting President as per the constitutional provisions of Bangladesh until a new president is appointed.

"I cannot provide any official comments regarding the resignation until the Speaker has received the letter," the spokesperson stated.

His resignation has sparked rumors that the government led by Prime Minister Tarique Rahman was dissatisfied with the largely ceremonial role of the president, according to various media outlets.

Shahabuddin, a veteran of the 1971 Liberation War and a former judge, took the oath of office in April 2023 for a five-year term.

He was elected by the previous parliament and remains the only official still in his constitutional role following the violent protests led by students in July-August 2024 that resulted in the downfall of Hasina's Awami League government.

Since August 5, 2024, Hasina has been residing in India.
