Strengthening Bilateral Relations

Dhaka: An agreement has been reached between Bangladesh and Turkiye to establish a joint ministerial committee focused on defense and foreign affairs, aimed at enhancing their political collaboration.

This announcement was made following a meeting on Saturday between Prime Minister Tarique Rahman and Turkish Foreign Minister Hakan Fidan, who is on a three-day visit to Dhaka.

According to reports from the state-run BSS news agency, the two nations have committed to forming this joint committee to bolster their bilateral relations.

The discussions also included plans for annual consultations between the foreign and defense ministers of both countries, which are intended to deepen their strategic partnership.

Fidan remarked that his visit marks a significant step towards elevating the relationship between Bangladesh and Turkiye to a strategic level, while also delivering greetings from President Recep Tayyip Erdogan to Rahman.

The talks covered various topics, including the Rohingya crisis, climate change, trade and investment opportunities, joint production initiatives, and other regional and international issues of shared interest.

Prime Minister Rahman expressed gratitude to Turkiye for its ongoing support, particularly in backing Bangladesh's candidate for the presidency of the 81st UN General Assembly session, and extended an invitation for Erdogan to visit Bangladesh soon.

On Friday, prior to his meeting with Rahman, the Turkish foreign minister engaged in discussions with his counterpart Khalilur Rahman and visited a Rohingya camp in Cox's Bazar.

Fidan's visit, which began on Thursday night, is part of a broader official tour across several East and South Asian countries, with Bangladesh being the fourth destination.
