Babar Azam Discusses Team Selection and Personal Performance Ahead of Sri Lanka Series
Babar Azam on His Role in Team Selection
Babar Azam, the captain of the Pakistan Test team, has clarified that he does not hold the ultimate authority in team selection. He stated that the selectors and coaching staff are responsible for deciding the squad, while his role is to maximize the potential of the players chosen. This statement comes as Pakistan prepares for a two-Test series against Sri Lanka, with the first match set to commence on November 9 in Rawalpindi, followed by the second Test starting on November 17 in Lahore.
In his comments, Babar emphasized that while he offers his insights, the final decisions rest with the selectors and coaches. His primary focus is to extract the best performances from the 15 players selected. He remarked, "My job is to get the best out of the players provided to me. The selection process is not my responsibility. The selectors and coaches have assembled the team, and my duty is to guide them towards achieving match-winning results. I cannot publicly disclose the specifics of my role, but I will always be open about my responsibilities within the team. I provide my input, and then the selectors and coaches execute their roles."
Recent Squad Changes and Strategic Direction
Babar's comments follow a series of last-minute adjustments to the squad for the upcoming series against Sri Lanka. Just two days before the first Test, Abdullah Fazal and Ali Usman were dropped, and four new players were introduced, three of whom are yet to make their Test debuts. This marks the second instance of squad reshuffling for Pakistan in as many Tests, following a previous overhaul before the third Test against England, where seven players were sent home and replaced.
Babar highlighted the team's strategy of blending young talent with experienced players, aiming to provide emerging cricketers with opportunities to shine and contribute to the team's progress. He stated, "Our squad is relatively young. We are striving to create a balanced mix of seasoned players and newcomers. We will give young players the chance to showcase their skills and help elevate our team to the next level."
Babar Reflects on His Recent Performance
Addressing his own recent struggles with form, Babar mentioned that he is actively collaborating with coaches to enhance his performance. He expressed skepticism about the effectiveness of taking a break from cricket, saying, "I am in discussions with coaches about areas for improvement. We are working on it together. I maintain a positive outlook. As a senior player, I strive to perform at my best. While opinions vary, I believe that taking a break won't facilitate improvement. I continuously seek to enhance my game. If I underperform, I analyze my mistakes. Perfection is unattainable, but I can always aim to improve. The more I play, the better I will become. Each day presents new challenges, and I prepare diligently in training and during matches. I work hard and trust that the results will follow."
