The Return of Khamenei's Remains to Iran

On Thursday, Iran's longest-serving Supreme Leader, Ayatollah Ali Khamenei, was returned to Iran from Iraq, accompanied by a fighter jet escorting the aircraft that carried his coffin. His burial is set to take place later in the day in his birthplace of Mashhad, following a week filled with mourning ceremonies and funeral processions in both Iran and Iraq. The coffin was transported from Iraq, where memorial services were conducted in the Shia holy cities of Najaf and Karbala. Footage shared by various news outlets depicted a fighter jet escorting the plane as it entered Iranian airspace.

In Mashhad, large crowds gathered in anticipation of the burial, with mourners displaying Iranian flags and images of the deceased leader. Visuals from the city captured the coffin being carried in a procession towards the revered Shrine of Imam Reza, where Khamenei is to be interred. Iranian officials have stated that he will be laid to rest alongside his infant granddaughter, daughter, son-in-law, and Zahra Haddad Adel, the spouse of his son Mojtaba Khamenei, all of whom lost their lives in the strikes on February 28.

According to reports from the official IRNA news agency, the burial prayers will be conducted by 101-year-old Ayatollah Hossein Noori Hamedani. Khamenei's chief of staff, Mohammad Mohammadi-Golpaygani, mentioned that the late leader had expressed a desire to be buried in Mashhad, a city of great significance in Shia Islam.

Khamenei served as Iran's second Supreme Leader from 1989 until his death on February 28, when he was killed during Operation Epic Fury, a military operation by the US in collaboration with Israel that targeted high-ranking Iranian officials. His passing has significantly heightened regional tensions, leading to an escalation in military confrontations between Iran and the US-Israel coalition, with both parties engaging in missile and drone strikes throughout the Middle East.

The arrival of Khamenei's coffin in Mashhad marks the conclusion of a week-long farewell that included funeral processions in Tehran, the clerical city of Qom, and the Iraqi shrine cities of Najaf and Karbala. This burial occurs amidst ongoing heightened tensions between Iran and the United States, with Iran resuming attacks on US military bases in Kuwait, Bahrain, and Qatar following American strikes on Iranian soil, raising new concerns regarding the security of the strategically important Strait of Hormuz.
