Weather Update for Northeast India

GUWAHATI, Jan 5: The Northeast region is likely to experience dense fog conditions until at least January 7, as the winter chill continues to affect Assam and its neighboring areas.

On Sunday, Guwahati recorded a maximum temperature of 22.5 degrees Celsius, which is 1.5 degrees lower than the average for this time of year. In contrast, the minimum temperature was 14.3 degrees Celsius, remaining 3.3 degrees above the normal range.

Dhubri reported a daytime temperature of 15.5 degrees, which is significantly below normal by 5.9 degrees. Similarly, Silchar and Tezpur recorded temperatures of 21.6 degrees (4 degrees below normal) and 21.4 degrees (2.4 degrees below normal), respectively.

Nighttime temperatures, however, were close to the seasonal average.

A meteorologist noted, 'Daytime temperatures in the region are low. The minimum temperature ranges between 13-15 degrees, which is slightly above normal. A fog layer, typical in northern India during this season, has spread to the Northeast, particularly affecting lower Assam districts and extending to central Assam. This fog has blocked sunlight during the day, preventing significant increases in daytime temperatures.'

In the last week of December, Guwahati's temperature did not exceed 20 degrees for three consecutive days. Currently, daytime temperatures are hovering around 22-24 degrees. 'At times, fog may not be visible at ground level, but it can still be present in the upper atmosphere,' he added.

The lowest temperature recorded in Guwahati this season was 11 degrees on January 1, while the historical lowest temperature for the city was 3 degrees, noted in January 1964.
