Dhruv Rathee's Critique of PM Modi

Popular YouTuber Dhruv Rathee, recognized for his candid critiques of the Indian government and Prime Minister Narendra Modi, recently voiced his dissatisfaction on X, formerly known as Twitter, regarding Modi's historic visit to Norway—the first by an Indian Prime Minister in over four decades. Rathee's comments drew sharp criticism from actress Gul Panag, who responded on the platform, arguing that his statements not only damage an individual's reputation but also weaken the institution itself.

Previously, Rathee had tweeted a critical message urging foreign journalists to “embarrass” PM Modi and hold him accountable. This came after an incident where Modi chose not to respond to questions from Norwegian journalist Helle Lyng during a joint press conference with Norwegian Prime Minister Jonas Gahr Store, opting instead to leave the scene.

Panag expressed her disapproval of Rathee's remarks, stating, "Not cool." She emphasized that while dissent against a Prime Minister or government is acceptable, actions like "protesting, debating, and voting differently" are vital components of a healthy democracy. However, she stressed that reducing the stature of India’s Prime Minister to a joke on foreign soil is inappropriate and does not represent true dissent. She concluded her tweet by asserting, "It diminishes him, the institution, and ultimately, us."

On May 19, Rathee had taken to social media to not only criticize PM Modi for ignoring the journalist but also expressed his belief that Modi "deserves to be humiliated everywhere he goes." He further stated, "Modi has not held a single press conference in 12 years since taking office, failing to meet the basic standards of transparency and accountability expected from a leader."

Rathee continued to encourage foreign journalists to question PM Modi whenever they encounter him, adding, “Embarrass him so much that he is compelled to show some accountability in front of the public. You will be doing a great service for India’s progress.” Meanwhile, following the viral exchange with PM Modi, journalist Helle Lyng faced significant online backlash, with some users accusing her of trying to undermine or embarrass India on an international platform.
