Will The Super Mario Galaxy Movie Outperform Its Predecessor at the Box Office?

The Super Mario Galaxy Movie has made a significant impact at the box office, earning over $315 million in North America during its second week. However, it falls short of its predecessor, The Super Mario Bros Movie, which grossed $574.9 million domestically. With a global total exceeding $639 million, analysts predict the sequel may earn between $430 million and $480 million, indicating it might not surpass the original's success. As the film continues its theatrical run, updates on its performance are eagerly awaited.

Box Office Performance of The Super Mario Galaxy Movie

The Super Mario Galaxy Movie has entered its second week in theaters, amassing over $315 million in North America. While this is a notable achievement, it significantly trails behind the domestic earnings of its predecessor, The Super Mario Bros Movie. This raises concerns about whether the sequel can match or exceed the original's success, prompting a detailed look at the box office results of both films.

On a global scale, The Super Mario Galaxy Movie has surpassed $600 million, positioning it as the third-highest-grossing video game film to date, following A Minecraft Movie and its predecessor. The animated sequel has consistently held a strong position at the box office and is projected to maintain its lead in domestic rankings for the upcoming days. According to Box Office Mojo, the film generated $2.7 million on its third Wednesday, marking the second-highest earnings for a video game adaptation on that day, although it still falls short of The Super Mario Bros Movie, which earned $4.8 million on the same day.

Despite its robust opening, The Super Mario Galaxy Movie has seen a notable decline in ticket sales, experiencing a 69% drop from the previous Wednesday. After 15 days in theaters, its domestic total has reached $317.6 million. In contrast, The Super Mario Bros Movie, released in 2023, achieved remarkable success with a domestic gross of $574.9 million, making it the highest-grossing video game adaptation ever.

Currently, The Super Mario Galaxy Movie is over $257 million short of matching its predecessor's domestic total. Box office experts estimate that the sequel will ultimately earn between $430 million and $480 million during its theatrical run, which is projected to be $95 million to $145 million less than The Super Mario Bros Movie. Given these forecasts, it seems unlikely that the sequel will surpass the original's earnings.

As of now, The Super Mario Galaxy Movie has generated over $639.03 million globally since its release on April 1. While the film continues to perform well at the box office, the earnings gap compared to The Super Mario Bros Movie indicates it may not reach the same level of success. Further updates on its box office performance are expected as the film continues its theatrical run.
