Super Mario Galaxy Movie's Box Office Success

The Super Mario Galaxy Movie remains a top choice for families across North America, with estimates suggesting it will exceed $400 million in domestic revenue today. As it nears this impressive milestone, the animated sequel is also poised to compete with the domestic box office results of Avatar: Fire and Ash, although it is still unclear if it will reach this goal by the weekend's end.

On a global scale, the animated sequel is expected to achieve a significant milestone this weekend, reinforcing its position as the highest-grossing film of the year with over $800 million in worldwide box office sales. Despite these remarkable earnings, the film is not performing as well as its predecessor and is unlikely to surpass it. However, it is projected to outdo A Minecraft Movie, thereby securing its place as the second-highest-grossing video game adaptation ever.

As reported by Box Office Mojo, The Super Mario Galaxy Movie has slipped to third place in the domestic box office rankings, earning $2.7 million on its fifth Friday. This amount represents the third-highest earnings for a fifth Friday in the history of video game adaptations in North America. The sequel saw a 41.3% drop from the previous Friday, coinciding with a reduction of 319 theaters from its screening schedule.

Currently, the film's domestic earnings total $393.3 million. In contrast, Avatar: Fire and Ash, directed by James Cameron, has garnered $404.3 million domestically, marking it as the least successful entry in the Avatar series. Released in December 2025, Avatar 3 achieved this total over 119 days, which is significantly shorter than its predecessors.

Looking forward, The Super Mario Galaxy Movie is anticipated to earn between $11 million and $13 million during its fifth three-day weekend, bringing its domestic total to around $402.6 million. While it may not yet match Avatar: Fire and Ash’s domestic earnings, it is expected to surpass it in the upcoming weeks. The film, featuring Mario as he explores cosmic realms and encounters galactic challenges, was released on April 1.
