Spielberg Reflects on His Time with Interstellar

Los Angeles: Renowned director Steven Spielberg has shared insights about his involvement in the 2014 film Interstellar, which he worked on before Christopher Nolan took over the directorial role.

Spielberg acknowledged that Nolan was indeed the 'better' choice for the film, emphasizing the significance of Nolan's vision.

As he prepares for the release of his upcoming project, Disclosure Day, in June, Spielberg reflected on his year-long engagement with the sci-fi narrative before Nolan's name emerged as a potential director, according to reports.

In an interview with Empire magazine, Spielberg revealed, “I was involved with Interstellar for a year… and I became fascinated with it. I spent a lot of time at the Jet Propulsion Laboratory in Pasadena, California, conversing with scientists and aerospace engineers.

He mentioned that he had enlisted Nolan's brother, Jonathan, to draft the initial scripts, but ultimately, it didn't materialize as planned. Jonathan had foreseen that if Spielberg opted out, Nolan would likely take the reins.

Spielberg remarked, “He was absolutely right. The moment I decided not to proceed, Chris jumped on board, probably the next day. Interstellar turned out to be a far superior film in Chris Nolan’s capable hands than it would have been in mine.”

Set in a bleak future where Earth faces severe environmental crises, the film chronicles a group of astronauts on a quest to find a new home for humanity.

The cast includes notable actors such as Matthew McConaughey, Anne Hathaway, Jessica Chastain, Bill Irwin, Ellen Burstyn, and Michael Caine.

Recently, Nolan attended a screening of Interstellar alongside actor Timothee Chalamet, where he discussed his journey to directing the film.

He recounted, “After we collaborated on Dark Knight, my brother got the job and began working with Steven. I get to call him Steven; he’s Mr. Spielberg to you.

He dedicated many years to the project, which underwent numerous changes. However, it only gained momentum once Spielberg was ready to step back, allowing Nolan to take over.

Nolan expressed his excitement about the project and the opportunity to infuse his own perspective into the film.

He stated, “I had numerous discussions with Jonathan over the years about his ambitions for the film. I was thrilled by it. The first act struck me profoundly. I had been exploring time travel concepts and had several half-formed ideas.

When the project became available, I approached Jonathan, asking, ‘How would you feel if I took this and merged it with some of my ideas?’ He was supportive, recognizing that my intention was to honor the essence of what he initially envisioned.”
