Ian Somerhalder's Transition from Acting to Family Life

Ian Somerhalder, best known for portraying Damon Salvatore in the hit series The Vampire Diaries, has made a notable retreat from the entertainment scene. The series, which ran from 2009 to 2017, significantly boosted his career, but he has opted to place greater emphasis on his family and personal passions. His last appearance in a feature film was in the 2014 British sci-fi action movie The Anomaly, followed by his role in Netflix’s V Wars, which marked his final acting endeavor.

In a recent discussion, Somerhalder revealed his thoughts on stepping away from acting, saying, “I think it’s in the rearview mirror. I do.” He and his spouse, Nikki Reed, have relocated from Los Angeles to dedicate more time to their family and agricultural pursuits. Somerhalder mentioned that he left a promising television career due to financial setbacks from a failed business venture, which he claims was marred by fraudulent activities that resulted in substantial debt.

Reed, who also appeared in V Wars, shared her own career reflections, highlighting her dedication to running two companies. She noted, “I work over 90 hours a week right now. I’m running a company full-time and just launched another.” Although she remains receptive to future acting roles, her primary focus is currently on her entrepreneurial efforts.

Even though he has stepped back from acting, Somerhalder continues to engage with the entertainment world as an executive producer. He contributed to the Netflix documentary Kiss the Ground, which emphasizes the significance of regenerative agriculture and soil health in addressing climate change. Furthermore, he has been involved in producing other projects like Ground Swell and Common Ground.

Looking back on his career transition, Somerhalder expressed a commitment to family and larger issues such as food security, energy, and sustainability. He remarked, “Once you reach a certain level, you’re like, ‘Okay, I want to focus on family and the future.’” For fans eager to see him on screen again, his previous works, including The Vampire Diaries and Lost, are still accessible for viewing.
