Chennai: A prominent production company has revealed plans to invest an impressive ₹100 crore into the making of the highly anticipated Malayalam film Drishyam 3, which stars the celebrated Mohanlal.
On Friday, Pen Studios announced its substantial investment in Aashirvad Cinemas, the studio behind Drishyam 3.
In a post on social media, Pen Studios shared, "Supporting one of India's most iconic thrillers with a ₹100 crore investment. #Drishyam3 hits theaters on May 21."
They also unveiled a motion poster stating, "Pen Studios to invest ₹100 crore in Aashirvad Cinemas through Panorama Studios for the film Drishyam 3, featuring Mohanlal."
Originally set for release on April 2, the film's debut was delayed due to ongoing tensions in the Gulf region. It is now scheduled to premiere on May 21.
Mohanlal completed filming his scenes in December of the previous year, and a video of him celebrating this milestone with a cake-cutting ceremony went viral.
Interestingly, he began work on this project just before receiving the prestigious Dadasaheb Phalke Award last year.
The film marks the third chapter in the acclaimed franchise, which was officially launched with a traditional puja ceremony at a law college near Kochi in September of last year.
Director Jeethu Joseph shared insights with the media prior to the launch, indicating that Drishyam 3 will delve into the next phase of Georgekutty's life, the character portrayed by Mohanlal.
Joseph elaborated, "The narrative centers on George Kutty's life after four-and-a-half years, which is the essence of the story."
Producer Antony Perumbavoor, a long-time associate of Mohanlal and instrumental in the Drishyam series' success, mentioned that the decision to proceed with the third installment followed extensive discussions.
"The overwhelming response to the first two films assured us that George Kutty's journey had more to reveal. We finalized this new version only after thorough discussions with Jeethu," Perumbavoor stated.
The film's crew filmed in various locations, including Thodupuzha and Vagamon, with the final five-day shoot taking place in Ernakulam.
Drishyam films have garnered a cult following in Indian cinema, known for their compelling narratives, intricate suspense, and Mohanlal's celebrated performances.
The first installment, released in 2013, set new standards in Malayalam cinema, while its sequel, which debuted in 2021, achieved record-breaking viewership in theaters and on streaming platforms.
