September is gearing up to be an exhilarating month for Odia cinema, with a diverse array of films ready for release. From supernatural thrillers like 'Dahaan – The Evil Within' to romantic dramas such as 'JADI', audiences can expect a rich tapestry of stories. Notable releases include 'Dandakali', inspired by a traditional festival, and 'Kankana', which blends folklore with horror. With several films generating buzz, this month promises to be significant for movie lovers in Odisha.
 

Exciting Releases in Odia Cinema


Bhubaneswar: The month of September is shaping up to be an exciting time for Odia cinema, showcasing a rich variety of films ready for theatrical release. With genres ranging from supernatural horror and mythology to romance and regional culture, Ollywood is set to captivate audiences during the Ganesh Puja festivities, which serve as a prime release period. A notable showdown is anticipated on September 11, when three Odia films will hit the screens simultaneously. Among these, Anupam Patnaik’s Dahaan – The Evil Within stands out as a highly awaited title.


This supernatural thriller, produced by Barsha Patnaik and Anupam Patnaik, features a talented cast including Barsha Patnaik, Aurosikha Mishra, Sanoj, and Partha Sarathi Ray. The film promises to deliver a gripping narrative filled with mystery and malevolence.


Also debuting on the same day is Dandakali, directed by the esteemed Sudhanshu Mohan Sahoo. This film draws inspiration from the traditional Danda kali festival celebrated in southern Odisha and stars Maheswata Ray, Sidhant Mohapatra, and Suryamayee Mohapatra. Adding a romantic twist to the festive competition is JADI, a youthful drama that explores themes of love, friendship, and nostalgia. This film, featuring Sailendra Samantaray, Priyambada, and Akash Hota, is both written and directed by Dibyajyoti Udaysingh. The excitement continues with Kankana, set to release on September 18.


Directed by Prithvi Raj Pattnaik and penned by Amit Kumar Dash, Kankana is a horror-thriller that intertwines Odisha’s rich folklore and mythology with chilling elements. The cast includes Supriya Nayak, Ankita Mohanty, Suryamayee Mohapatra, and Choudhury Jayaprakash Das.


Another film premiering on September 18 is Maliput Melodies, which delves into the culture, music, landscapes, and lives of the people in Koraput. This film has been selected for the Indian Panorama Feature Film category at IFFI 2025. With additional projects like Pashapalli – The Game of Politics, Ei Bodhe Bhala Paiba, Debakanya, Lankagada, and The Mangalpur Diary also generating excitement, September is poised to be a landmark month for Odia cinema.
