A New Chapter in Theatre: Mahesh Bhatt and Anu Malik Unite

Iconic filmmaker Mahesh Bhatt and celebrated music composer Anu Malik have a history of creating unforgettable music for films such as Zakhm (1998) and Sir (1993), along with the TV film Phir Teri Kahani Yaad Aayee. Now, they are set to collaborate once again for Bhatt's latest theatrical venture, titled Wo Subah Hum Hi Se Aayegi. This original play is scheduled to debut in Mumbai on July 5 and is expected to mark a significant moment in their creative partnership. The production is produced by Mahesh Bhatt, directed by Tariquee Hameed, and written by Dinesh Gautam, featuring talented theatre actor Imran Zahid and actress Namitaa Sachdeva.

In an exclusive interview, Mahesh Bhatt shared his thoughts on reuniting with Malik, reminiscing about the composer's journey and their enduring bond. “Whenever I think of Anu, I cannot separate him from the memory of his father, the late Sardar Malik sahib,” Bhatt expressed, highlighting his respect for the late music composer.

“He was an incredibly gifted composer, yet he belonged to a generation that sometimes found it challenging to assert itself in a competitive landscape. His grace and humility were unique, and perhaps that is why he did not receive the recognition he truly deserved,” the visionary director noted.
Bhatt elaborated that Anu Malik's experiences shaped his career. “He observed both the brilliance of his father and the challenges that followed. Those experiences instilled in him a remarkable drive to work, evolve, and appreciate success.”
Discussing Malik's musical prowess, Bhatt remarked that even today, he is impressed by Malik’s unwavering passion, which he believes “has not diminished.” He added, “Every time he commits to a project, he brings the same energy, curiosity, and enthusiasm that I noticed decades ago.”
“This is why working with him feels more than just a professional relationship; it feels as natural as breathing. There is a trust between us that has developed over a lifetime, and that trust found a beautiful expression once again in Wo Subah Hum Hi Se Aayegi."
Bhatt also explained why Malik was the perfect choice for the stage production, emphasizing that the seasoned musician instinctively understood the emotional core of the narrative.

"When he agreed to compose for Wo Subah Hum Hi Se Aayegi, I wasn't reminded of any specific film or song. Instead, I recalled the quality that has always defined him - his ability to respond to authenticity. He recognized that this was not a commercial endeavor; it was a heartfelt project driven by individuals who believe theatre can still ask challenging questions. That generosity moved me.”
According to Bhatt, the music Malik has created does not overshadow the play but rather weaves seamlessly into its emotional narrative, almost acting as another character. “That’s the Anu Malik I have always respected - not just a composer of memorable tunes, but an artist who understands the heartbeat of a story before he writes a single note."
Reflecting on his return to theatre, Bhatt stated, "I never truly left theatre. In many ways, everything I have done from Arth to Daddy, from Zakhm to Hamari Adhuri Kahani has always been theatre disguised as cinema. At this stage in my life, I find myself returning to the basics."
Inspired by Sahir Ludhianvi's iconic verse, Wo Subah Hum Hi Se Aayegi embodies the hope that a new dawn arrives not by chance, but through the courage of ordinary individuals to embrace their true selves.
