Hokum's Impressive Box Office Debut

Directed by Damian McCarthy, 'Hokum' is a supernatural horror film that has made a significant mark at the North American box office, especially during its preview screenings. The film has outshined the previous earnings of 'Immaculate', marking a notable success for Neon Studio's releases. Despite facing tough competition from blockbuster films and ensemble casts, 'Hokum' has attracted considerable attention for its impressive performance.

The film features a remarkable ensemble cast, including Peter Coonan, David Wilmot, Florence Ordesh, Michael Patric, Will O’Connell, Brendan Conroy, and Austin Amelio in key roles. Both critics and audiences have responded favorably, with high ratings on various review aggregator sites. Critics have lauded the film, calling it 'a quintessential haunted house tale infused with atmospheric folklore and expertly-timed scares,' further solidifying McCarthy's reputation as a contemporary horror maestro.

Reports indicate that 'Hokum' has amassed $900,000 at the domestic box office from its Thursday previews, eclipsing 'Immaculate’s' $415,000 during the same period. This achievement marks the second-highest preview earnings for a Neon release in North America, only behind 'Longlegs', which garnered $3 million in Thursday previews earlier this year.

However, 'Hokum' will face tough competition from other major releases, including 'The Devil Wears Prada 2', which is also premiering this weekend, and 'Michael', now in its second week. As a result, securing a top two position in the domestic box office rankings may be a challenge.

The film is anticipated to earn between $6 million and $8 million during its opening weekend, potentially marking one of the most successful debuts for Neon. The storyline follows novelist Ohm Bauman, played by Adam Scott, who retreats to a remote inn to scatter his parents’ ashes, only to become entangled in eerie tales of a witch haunting the honeymoon suite. As unsettling visions intensify and a shocking disappearance unfolds, he must confront the darkest elements of his past. 'Hokum' was released on May 1.
