Box Office Highlights

In an unexpected twist at the box office, the slasher parody 'Scary Movie 6' has taken the lead as the top film of the weekend, raking in an impressive USD 55 million, as per studio estimates released on Sunday. This development signifies a notable change in the film industry, with 'Scary Movie 6' easily surpassing the lackluster performance of 'Masters of the Universe', which failed to resonate with viewers. The triumph of 'Scary Movie 6' follows a three-week dominance of indie horror films, such as 'Obsession' and 'Backrooms', which have successfully attracted Gen Z audiences.

'Scary Movie 6' has established itself as a strong competitor, accumulating a total of USD 105.5 million globally during its opening weekend. This latest entry in the franchise, co-penned by the Wayans brothers, has even outperformed the box office results of its main rival, the 'Scream' series, which saw 'Scream 7' launch with USD 97 million earlier this year. Despite receiving mixed reviews, with only a 26% fresh rating on Rotten Tomatoes and a 'B' CinemaScore from viewers, the film's USD 30 million budget has allowed it to overshadow its rivals.

On the other hand, 'Masters of the Universe', a sword-and-sorcery action-adventure film inspired by the 1980s animated series, debuted with USD 29.3 million domestically and added USD 25 million from international markets. However, with a production budget nearing USD 200 million, its performance is disappointing, positioning it as a financial setback for Mattel Studios, especially in light of the massive success of 'Barbie', which grossed USD 1.45 billion.

Meanwhile, A24's 'Backrooms' saw a significant decline in its second weekend, earning USD 25.9 million, marking a 68% drop from its previous weekend. Despite this downturn, the film has become A24's highest-grossing release to date, totaling USD 212 million worldwide. Similarly, Focus Features' 'Obsession' continues to thrive, earning USD 25.6 million in its fourth weekend, bringing its domestic total to USD 152.1 million and USD 224.8 million globally, setting new records for the studio.

This weekend's overall box office performance showed a remarkable 63% increase compared to the same weekend last year, with ticket sales for the year up by over 13%. As the industry looks forward, excitement builds for the upcoming release of Steven Spielberg's 'Disclosure Day', set to premiere next weekend. The top ten films by domestic box office for the weekend include 'Scary Movie 6' at the forefront, followed by 'Masters of the Universe', 'Backrooms', 'Obsession', and 'The Amazing Digital Circus: The Last Act'.
