Vijay's 'Jan Nayakan' Faces Censorship Challenges

Tamil Nadu's Chief Minister and actor Vijay is in the spotlight with his forthcoming movie, *Jan Nayakan*. After a series of controversies, the film is finally poised for its theatrical debut. Producer K. Venkata Narayana elaborated on the changes mandated by the Central Board of Film Certification (CBFC) prior to the film receiving its certification.

**Controversial Dialogue Altered**
One of the major modifications to the film, directed by H. Vinoth, involved a dialogue that compared Dr. B.R. Ambedkar’s Constitution with that of Vijay’s political party, 'Tamizhaga Vettri Kazhagam' (TVK). The original line suggested, "If Ambedkar's Constitution is disregarded, then the TVK constitution will take effect."

**Simplified Language for Clarity**
Narayana clarified that the dialogue's intent was more straightforward than it appeared. In an interview, he stated, "The essence was about the consequences of not adhering to the Constitution, articulated in everyday language. Just like at home, you might tell a child that ignoring rules leads to repercussions."

**CBFC's Reasons for Changes**
He further noted, "Due to the political nature of the language, modifications were necessary. We respect the laws and complied with all requested changes."

**CBFC Directives**
The CBFC mandated the removal of a segment lasting around 20 seconds and alterations to about 10 seconds of footage. In addition to the dialogue concerning Ambedkar and TVK, the board required changes to a book cover featuring Dr. Ambedkar's image. Several religious references were either muted or eliminated, including the terms 'Bhagavathan', 'Ranganathar', and 'Om', which were muted in the soundtrack, while 'Om' was completely removed from a dialogue regarding 'Operation Meluha'.

What Certification Did the Film Obtain?
In response to the censorship, Narayana remarked that the film industry must adhere to the Censor Board's certifications, leaving them with little choice but to comply. The filmmakers submitted *Jan Nayakan* in December 2025, and a five-member committee initially recommended a U/A 16+ certificate with specific cuts.

Film Sent to Revising Committee
After implementing the changes, the film was resubmitted, but the CBFC Chairman referred it to the Revising Committee, causing delays. This resulted in a legal dispute in the Madras High Court, after which the filmmakers withdrew their petition and resubmitted the film, which was ultimately approved with an 'A' certificate. The film is now set to hit theaters on July 23.
