Celebrating a Cinematic Legend

The Odisha government has recently unveiled the State Film Awards for the years 2023 and 2024, with the esteemed Mohan Sundar Deb Goswami Award for 2023 being awarded to the legendary actor Shyamalendu Bhattacharya. This accolade acknowledges his significant contributions to Odia cinema over an impressive span of more than fifty years. Renowned for his performances in timeless films such as Kie Kahara, Stree, Jhilimili, Abhimaan, Jajabara, Sindura Bindu, Mamata, Nagaphasa, and Sri Jagannath, Bhattacharya remains a towering figure in the industry.

Following this recognition, the acclaimed actor shared his thoughts with Arindam Ganguly from Sunday POST, discussing his remarkable career, unforgettable roles, and the transformation of Odia cinema throughout the years.

Reflecting on a Remarkable Journey

Bhattacharya expressed his feelings about receiving this honor, stating, "It’s a wonderful sensation—one that’s hard to articulate. When the state acknowledges your contributions to cinema, it brings immense joy. Such recognitions validate the years of hard work, dedication, and perseverance. This is undoubtedly one of the proudest moments of my career."

Looking Back at a Legacy

When asked about his cinematic journey, he reflected, "I look back with immense satisfaction. I have no regrets as I approached my work with honesty and sincerity. Regardless of the roles I took on, I always gave my utmost. The love and appreciation from audiences over the years are my greatest achievements and the most rewarding aspects of my career."

The Art of Comedy

Bhattacharya, who has made countless audiences laugh, shared his insights on comedy, stating, "Comedy has always been my passion. I grew up admiring legendary comedians, and their performances greatly inspired me. From an early age, I aspired to bring joy through meaningful humor. A great comedian must possess impeccable timing, natural expressions, and the ability to connect with the audience effortlessly, without seeming forced."

Evolution of Comedy in Odia Cinema

He noted the significant changes in comedy over the years, saying, "I miss the era of clean, situational humor. Comedy has evolved considerably; earlier, it was rooted in strong writing and well-crafted scenarios. Nowadays, good comedic writing is often lacking, leading to humor that can be loud or crass. There’s a growing reliance on gimmicks rather than thoughtfully written scripts. I certainly long for the days when comedy was clean, subtle, and naturally entertaining."

Future of Odia Cinema

Discussing the current state of Odia cinema, Bhattacharya emphasized the need for stronger scripts, stating, "The Odia film industry has tremendous potential, but we must prioritize strong storytelling. Good narratives are the backbone of great cinema. Having experience in both Odia and Bengali films, I believe we can learn a lot from Bengali cinema, especially in script development and content-driven filmmaking. By focusing on meaningful stories and better writing, Odia cinema can reach even greater heights."

Advice for Aspiring Actors

To young actors aiming for a respected career in film, he advised, "Believe in yourself and trust your abilities. Avoid imitating others, as every actor has a unique identity that audiences remember. Keep learning, work diligently, remain disciplined, and stay humble. Success may take time, but sincerity and perseverance will always leave a lasting impact."
