Karan Mehra's Perspective on OTT vs. Traditional Television

Actor Karan Mehra, best known for his portrayal of Naitik Singhania in the hit series Yeh Rishta Kya Kehlata Hai, has recently shared his thoughts on the ongoing discourse surrounding the influence of OTT platforms on traditional television. He believes that the conversation often neglects the essential distinctions between these two forms of media, which cater to different audiences and viewing habits. According to Mehra, OTT and television do not compete directly, as they function on separate wavelengths and address diverse viewer requirements.

In a recent interview, Mehra reflected on his experiences with micro-dramas, a format he considers fundamentally different from standard television shows. He pointed out that while some argue that OTT is eclipsing traditional TV, the truth is more complex. "Micro-dramas are crafted for quick, intense viewing experiences," he stated. "They are fast-paced and designed for shorter attention spans, with narratives that significantly differ from traditional television storytelling." He emphasized that the concise nature of these stories leads to tighter scripts and swift emotional arcs, creating a distinct storytelling style.

Mehra also highlighted that television continues to hold a significant place in viewers' lives due to the culture it has developed over time. "There’s a viewing culture surrounding TV where audiences can engage with a show, its storyline, or characters for several years," he remarked. This long-term engagement nurtures a sense of familiarity and connection that remains strong, indicating that many viewers still value extended narratives.

Moreover, the actor noted that younger viewers are increasingly attracted to the vertical format of micro-dramas, as it aligns with their content consumption preferences. "The new generation naturally gravitates towards micro-dramas because the format resonates with their pace and the way they interact with content on their devices," he observed, suggesting that this trend mirrors broader shifts in media consumption habits.

Despite the growth of OTT platforms, Mehra is confident that this change does not spell the end for television. "It simply means we now have parallel mediums catering to different audiences," he asserted. "Both can coexist because they serve distinct needs." In addition to his iconic role in Yeh Rishta Kya Kehlata Hai, Mehra has featured in several other shows, including Khatmal E Ishq, Shubharambh, and Mehndi Wala Ghar, and was a contestant on Bigg Boss 10 in 2016.
