Hacks Season 5: A Bold Conclusion

The fifth and concluding season of Hacks showcases the creators' adventurous spirit, experimenting with innovative concepts. In a prior episode, Deborah Vance, portrayed by Jean Smart, and her daughter DJ (Kaitlyn Olson) participated in a celebrity edition of The Amazing Race. The latest episode features Deborah and Ava (Hannah Einbinder) as a couple, as Deborah seeks a Bob Mackie jumpsuit from her rival Kelly Kilpatrick (Cherry Jones). Prior to the episode's release, Einbinder discussed the significance of queerness in this Emmy-winning HBO comedy.

Deborah Vance: A Queer Icon

During a press conference, Emmy winner Einbinder elaborated on why Smart's character, Deborah Vance, resonates as a queer icon. She remarked, "This aspect is fundamental to her identity. One of the most remarkable dialogues about queerness and queer icons occurs between Tim Bagley and Carl Clemons-Hopkins in Palm Springs, where they explore the love for a diva."

Einbinder believes that Deborah embodies the essence of a queer icon, with the writing team crafting authentic experiences. She added, "Ava is a creation of queer individuals who brought to life a vivid character. Upon reading the script, I realized this character is fully fleshed out. There are no clichés or caricatures; it reflects genuine experiences. The show captures the spirit of the underdog, resonating with many queer individuals, and this theme permeates throughout, featuring remarkable characters centered around the diva herself."

Co-creator, writer, and director Lucia Aniello humorously noted that the phrase "Fabulous Dabulous" might become a lasting legacy of the show within the queer community. She emphasized that Hacks aims to celebrate joy, particularly queer joy, stating, "Our show strives to embody fabulousness in every moment."
