Tributes Pour In for Legendary Tamil Filmmaker Bharathiraja
Remembering Bharathiraja
The Indian cinema community is mourning the loss of the iconic Tamil director Bharathiraja, who passed away on June 10 at the age of 84 in Chennai. His health had been deteriorating for some time. Renowned figures from the South Indian film industry, including Rajinikanth and SS Rajamouli, have expressed their sorrow over his passing. Bharathiraja was not only a celebrated director but also made his mark as an actor in films like Aayutha Ezhuthu, Pandianadu, and Kennedy Club. His final acting appearance was in the Malayalam film Thudaram last year. The film's lead, Mohanlal, along with director Tharun Moorthy, fondly remembered the legendary director, who continued to give his best despite facing health challenges.

On social media platform X (formerly Twitter), Mohanlal expressed that collaborating with Bharathiraja was a privilege he would always treasure. He emphasized that the director's influence would resonate through future generations, and his absence would be profoundly felt. Mohanlal described Bharathiraja as "a director who found poetry in the soil, truth in silence, and soul in every frame."
Tharun Moorthy shared several behind-the-scenes images from the set of Thudaram, expressing his gratitude with a simple message: "Thank you, Master." He noted that the memories of working on Thudaram would remain with him forever, adding a broken heart emoji to his post. In the film, Bharathiraja played a supporting role as stunt master Palani Swamy, mentoring Mohanlal's character, "Benz" Shanmugham, a former stuntman.

In a conversation with OnManorama, Tharun Moorthy shared that Bharathiraja was eager to share the screen with Mohanlal rather than merely acting in his film. Despite facing significant health challenges and memory issues, Bharathiraja was determined not to burden the cast and crew of Thudaram.
Tharun assisted Bharathiraja during dubbing sessions by sitting beside him and whispering his lines, as the National Award-winning director struggled to recall his dialogues. Tharun expressed his appreciation that Bharathiraja could deliver his lines in his unique voice. After completing the dubbing, Tharun recounted the film's narrative once more, which deeply moved the late filmmaker, particularly the bond between his character and Mohanlal's.
Prominent figures, including Tamil Nadu's CM Vijay, visited Bharathiraja's residence in Chennai to pay their final respects. The former actor announced that the funeral procession would receive full state honors as a tribute to the legendary director.
