On Friday, Union Home Minister Amit Shah expressed his sorrow over the death of esteemed shooter and coach Jaspal Rana, describing it as an "irreparable loss to the nation."


"I am deeply saddened by the passing of the legendary sportsperson Jaspal Rana Ji. He devoted his life to showcasing India's prowess in shooting, earning international accolades and mentoring young shooters. His loss is a profound one for our country. I extend my heartfelt condolences to his family and the countless fans who admired him," Amit Shah shared on social media.

Earlier, Prime Minister Narendra Modi also expressed his condolences, stating, "I am deeply saddened by the passing of Shri Jaspal Rana Ji. His departure is a significant loss for Indian sports. He brought immense pride to our nation through his remarkable achievements in shooting. His role as a mentor, guiding young athletes with dedication, was equally commendable. His commitment to excellence and service to sports earned him great respect. My thoughts are with his family, friends, and the entire sports community during this difficult time. Om Shanti."

Uttarakhand Chief Minister Pushkar Singh Dhami also mourned Rana's death, stating, "The sudden passing of Shri Jaspal Rana Ji, a proud son of Devbhoomi Uttarakhand and a Padma Shri awardee, is heartbreaking. His remarkable contributions to shooting and the inspiration he provided to young athletes have brought honor to India on the global stage. His legacy will inspire future generations. His loss is irreplaceable for the sports community, Uttarakhand, and the nation. I pray for his soul and for strength for his family and admirers to cope with this immense sorrow."


A Legacy of Excellence in Shooting

Jaspal Rana, one of India's most celebrated shooters, leaves behind an impressive legacy that spans over three decades.


He is recognized as India's most successful athlete in the Commonwealth Games, having won a remarkable total of 15 medals: nine gold, four silver, and two bronze across the 1994, 1998, 2002, and 2006 Games.


Rana's achievements extended beyond the Commonwealth Games, securing four gold medals and one silver at the Asian Games, including a gold at the 1994 Hiroshima Asian Games and a historic three gold medals at the 2006 Doha Asian Games.


At the 1994 World Shooting Championships in Milan, he won gold while setting a record score. He also matched the world record in the 25m Centre Fire Pistol event with a total score of 590 during the 2006 Asian Games.


At the time of his passing, Rana was serving as India's high-performance coach for pistol events. His dual role as a champion shooter and mentor has left a lasting impact on Indian sports.
