Sanjay Gupta made his cinematic debut in 1994 with Aatish: Feel the Fire, featuring Aditya Pancholi and Sanjay Dutt.
He later directed and wrote several films, including Ram Shastra, Khauff, and Jung. During the production of Kaante in Los Angeles in 2001, the 9/11 attacks necessitated relocating some filming locations due to security concerns.
Throughout his extensive career, Gupta collaborated with actor Sanjay Dutt on multiple projects, including Kaante, Musafir, Zinda, and Shootout at Lokhandwala. Notably, Zinda was an unofficial adaptation of the South Korean film Oldboy.
He also produced Shootout at Lokhandwala and Dus Kahaniyaan, and directed and co-produced Shootout at Wadala, a prequel to Shootout at Lokhandwala.
His most recent project was The Miranda Brothers, released in 2025, which he directed and produced, featuring Harshvardhan Rane and Meezaan Jafri.
The film tells the story of an orphan who is rescued from the trash and becomes devoted to his elder brother, both aspiring to be star footballers, until their mother's mysterious death threatens to separate them.
He is survived by his wife, Anu Lekhi.
