Understanding G.R.L.

G.R.L., which stands for Girls Rock Life, was established in 2012 by Robin Antin, the creator of The Pussycat Dolls. Initially seen as a successor to The Pussycat Dolls, G.R.L. eventually carved out its own identity. The original lineup included Lauren Bennett, Simone Battle, Natasha Slayton, Emmalyn Estrada, and Paula van Oppen. The group gained popularity with their blend of dance-pop, teen pop, R&B, and electronic music, characterized by vibrant choreography and empowering lyrics. They debuted in 2013 with the song 'Vacation,' featured in the soundtrack of The Smurfs 2. Their major breakthrough came in 2014 with the collaboration 'Wild Wild Love' alongside Pitbull. Their hit 'Ugly Heart' became a defining anthem for the group, along with other successful tracks like 'Show Me What You Got,' 'Lighthouse,' 'Are We Good,' and 'Kiss Myself.' Following Simone’s tragic passing, the group shifted its focus, releasing 'Lighthouse' as a tribute and partnering with mental health organizations to promote awareness. G.R.L. entered an indefinite hiatus in 2015 but returned in 2016 with Lauren, Natasha, and Jazzy Mejja, releasing singles such as 'Kiss Myself' and 'Are We Good.' In 2020, the original members reunited for online appearances but did not produce new music.
