The Kerala Story 2 Faces Challenges at the Box Office
The Kerala Story 2 Released Amid Controversy
The Kerala Story 2: Goes Beyond has made its debut in cinemas following the Kerala High Court's decision to lift the ban on its release on February 27. The film's creators had high hopes for this sequel to The Kerala Story, but initial audience reactions, particularly in Kerala, have been underwhelming. Reports indicate that numerous screenings have been canceled due to low attendance in the state. Furthermore, advance ticket sales for the second day have also been quite limited, suggesting that many in Kerala are hesitant to support the film, which they believe misrepresents the state's culture.
Struggles in Kerala
The Kerala Story 2 Faces Low Turnout
According to a report from a prominent news outlet, several screenings were canceled in various theaters across Kerala. On its opening night, venues in Kochi, Thrissur, and Kozhikode had to pull shows due to insufficient audience turnout. Afternoon screenings at popular locations like Lulu Mall and Travancore saw ticket sales of only 25 and 5, respectively. Theater operators have stated they will only proceed with screenings if at least 10 tickets are sold. This disappointing start for The Kerala Story 2 comes after a petition was filed against its censor certificate, alleging that the film portrays Kerala and its residents negatively and perpetuates harmful stereotypes. Initially, the court imposed a 15-day stay on the film's release, but the filmmakers quickly sought a review of this decision.
Producer's Response
Producer Vipul Amrutlal Shah's Comments
Following the court's decision to allow the release of The Kerala Story 2, producer Vipul Amrutlal Shah shared his thoughts. He emphasized that Kerala is a beautiful and 'God-loving' region and asserted that the film does not depict the state or its people in a negative light. Shah remarked, “Some criminals are from Kerala, while others come from Madhya Pradesh and Rajasthan, which is why we titled the film The Kerala Story 2 Goes Beyond.”
