The Drama's Box Office Triumph

The Drama has shown impressive endurance at the North American box office, even after losing a considerable number of screens last Friday. Recently, it crossed the $100 million milestone globally, solidifying its position as a formidable box-office player. This weekend, it is poised to outshine Materialists, another film that debuted earlier this year.

Despite facing stiff competition from Anne Hathaway’s Mother Mary, which received a broader release in North America, The Drama has emerged as the stronger contender. It marks the fifth film from A24 to surpass $100 million in worldwide earnings, outpacing the global total of Zendaya’s earlier project, Challengers. With a production budget of under $30 million, this romantic comedy has not only broken even but is also generating substantial profits.

In its fourth weekend, The Drama garnered around $2.6 million at the North American box office. Although it lost 807 theaters, the film's decline was limited to just 45.6% compared to the previous weekend. Currently, it trails behind Marty Supreme, which earned $5.6 million, and Civil War, which brought in $3.6 million. After four weekends, The Drama has amassed a total of $44.8 million in North America.

On the international front, the film is also thriving, earning $5.7 million during its fourth weekend. This reflects a 48.2% decrease from the prior weekend, yet it has successfully reached $62 million overseas across 45 markets. As a result, The Drama's global earnings have soared to an impressive $106.9 million.

Materialists, which was released in 2025, was the first independent film of the year to achieve over $100 million globally, grossing $107.9 million on a $20 million budget. It currently holds the title of the fourth-highest-grossing film in A24’s history. The Drama is now just $1 million away from surpassing Materialists, which would elevate it to the rank of A24’s fourth highest-grosser ever. The film, featuring Zendaya and Robert Pattinson, premiered on April 3.
