The Devil Wears Prada 2 Surpasses Original Film's Earnings

In its second weekend, The Devil Wears Prada 2, featuring stars like Meryl Streep, Anne Hathaway, Emily Blunt, and Stanley Tucci, has already exceeded the box office performance of the original 2006 film. Directed by David Frankel, the first installment grossed a total of $326.5 million globally. Remarkably, the sequel has surpassed that figure in just nine days. With Mother's Day approaching on May 10, the film is expected to see a significant boost in its box office performance for the second consecutive week.

Record-Breaking Earnings in Just Nine Days

As reported by Deadline, the sequel raked in $101.8 million during its opening week in the United States and $222.2 million worldwide. Although it is competing with another sequel, Mortal Kombat II, which premiered on May 8, the predominantly female audience for The Devil Wears Prada 2 is returning for repeat viewings. This could lead to an estimated $40 to $50 million in earnings for its second weekend. Additionally, by May 9, the sequel is projected to surpass the original film's entire domestic earnings of $124.7 million in just nine days.

Director Frankel, along with screenwriter Aline Brosh McKenna and the lead cast, waited for the perfect moment to create this sequel. According to Variety, Streep, Hathaway, and Blunt each received $12.5 million as part of a 'favoured nations' agreement regarding their salaries. This arrangement also allows them to earn substantial bonuses as the sequel continues to break records. The original film was produced on a budget of $35 million and grossed $326 million worldwide, while the sequel's budget was significantly higher at $100 million, primarily due to the cast's salaries.
