Tarun Khanna Reflects on Nepotism in Bollywood

Actor Tarun Khanna recently shared his thoughts on the ongoing nepotism debate in Bollywood, revealing why he has not returned to films despite early opportunities. In a candid interview with Telly Talk India, he highlighted the influence of film families, particularly the Kapoors, and emphasized that connections have always played a significant role in the industry. Khanna noted that for outsiders, securing that initial opportunity is often the most daunting challenge. However, he also defended the concept of nepotism, suggesting that it is natural for industry insiders to assist their children in entering the field.

Challenges of Returning to Films

During his conversation with Telly Talk India, Khanna remarked on the longstanding presence of film families in Bollywood. He pointed out that many actors have gained advantages through familial ties, making it particularly tough for newcomers to break into the industry. "I couldn't return because my father isn't a filmmaker, and my mother doesn't produce or direct. Most people in the industry come from film families. If I start naming them, you'll be surprised. From Raj Kapoor to Deva Nand, they all had influential relatives. It's easy to claim you got your first chance, but it's incredibly challenging to actually secure it," he explained. He acknowledged that only a handful of actors have successfully navigated their careers without such backing, citing examples like Shah Rukh Khan and Sushant Singh Rajput.

Khanna elaborated on his absence from films, stating that he lacked the industry support that many actors benefit from through their families. He mentioned that television has provided him with consistent work and recognition, making it unnecessary for him to seek opportunities in films. "We continuously received work on TV. When you have good opportunities there, why look elsewhere?" he said.

Khanna's Take on Nepotism

While acknowledging the contentious nature of nepotism, Khanna expressed that he sees no inherent issue with parents aiding their children in entering the film industry. "Nepotism isn't wrong in the film world. It's misguided to label it as bad," he stated. He further explained, "Those who invest in the industry have the right to promote their own. They can elevate their children, their drivers, or even their washermen to stardom. There’s nothing wrong with that." However, he criticized the practice when individuals continue to receive opportunities despite repeated failures, saying, "Nepotism becomes problematic when some individuals consistently underperform. If they fail in one film, two, or even three, they likely won't succeed in the next. Stop blaming us for that."

He also mentioned several successful actors from film families, including Hrithik Roshan, Ranbir Kapoor, Kareena Kapoor, Saif Ali Khan, Varun Dhawan, Sunny Deol, and Bobby Deol, asserting that they have proven their worth through their performances.

Tarun Khanna is a well-known Indian actor recognized for his roles in television and films.
