Sunny Deol's Decision for 'Gabru'

Mumbai, March 9: Bollywood star Sunny Deol, known for his recent role in ‘Border 2’, is eager to have his upcoming action-drama ‘Gabru’ released in theaters.

Deol prefers a theatrical debut over an initial OTT release, especially since his other film ‘Ikka’ is set to premiere directly on streaming platforms, according to insider information.

A source close to the actor revealed, ‘Gabru’ was originally intended for OTT. However, after viewing the film, Abbas Mustan encouraged Sunny to opt for a theatrical release, which he subsequently agreed to.

The film's budget is estimated between Rs 45-50 crore, excluding prints and advertising costs. While the producers initially aimed for an OTT launch, after screenings, Deol felt a theatrical release was more fitting, particularly since ‘Ikka’ is also going the OTT route. Influential figures like Abbas Mustan, Anil Sharma, and Rahul Rawail supported this decision.

Directed and written by Shashank Udapurkar, ‘Gabru’ is produced by Om Chhangani and Vishal Rana, featuring actors Simran Bagga and Prit Kamani in significant roles. The music is crafted by Mithoon, with lyrics penned by Sayeed Quadri, alongside contributions from Satinder Sartaaj and Anurag Saikia.

The film is characterized as a drama that explores themes of bravery, conscience, identity, and resilience. It focuses on a character-driven storyline that emphasizes moral fortitude and emotional conflict rather than typical action sequences. The narrative follows a protagonist facing both personal and societal hurdles, embodying concepts of empathy and inner strength.

Sunny Deol announced ‘Gabru’ on October 19, 2025, coinciding with his 68th birthday, when he unveiled the film’s first look on social media.

Initially slated for a theatrical release on March 13, 2026, the film's premiere has been postponed to May 2026 to prevent competition with other films like ‘Dhurandhar: The Revenge’ and ‘Toxic’, the latter of which has moved its release to June. Distribution will be handled by PVR INOX Pictures.
