Sundar C Transitions from Cinema to Politics in Tamil Nadu
Sundar C's Political Journey Begins
After a successful three-decade career in the Tamil film industry, Sundar C is making his political debut as the candidate for the New Justice Party (NJP) in the Madurai Central Assembly constituency for the upcoming 2026 Tamil Nadu elections. He will be contesting under the National Democratic Alliance (NDA) banner, likely facing off against the current IT Minister, Palanivel Thiaga Rajan. This political move follows in the footsteps of his wife, Khushbu Sundar, who is actively involved in politics as the vice-president of BJP Tamil Nadu.
Sundar C's Entry into Tamil Nadu Politics
Stepping into the political landscape after a notable career in cinema, Sundar C will represent the NJP in the Madurai Central Assembly constituency. This area is currently held by Palanivel Thiaga Rajan, who is anticipated to be renominated by the DMK, setting the stage for a significant electoral contest.
AC Shanmugam, the founder-president of NJP, officially introduced Sundar C as the party's candidate, referring to him as the 'son of Chidambaram Pillai.' The NJP has confirmed that the BJP will allocate one seat for them as part of the NDA alliance, with official announcements regarding constituencies expected by March 30. Sundar C's political ambitions align with the increasing involvement of other film personalities in Tamil Nadu politics, such as actor Vijay, who has established the Tamilaga Vettri Kazhagam (TVK) and is actively campaigning for the April 23 elections.
Married to the well-known actor-producer Khushbu Sundar, who ran as a BJP candidate in the 2021 Assembly elections and currently serves as the party's vice-president in Tamil Nadu, Sundar recently attended the foundation-laying ceremony for a 140-foot statue of freedom fighter VO Chidambaram Pillai in Madurai, honoring his grandfather's legacy.
Upcoming Film Projects for Sundar C
His latest appearance was in the film Gangers (2025), and he is currently working on Vishal's upcoming project Purushan, which marks another collaboration following Aambala and Madha Gaja Raja. This film also features Tamannaah Bhatia and is produced by Benzz Media, with Khushbu Sundar presenting it. The music is composed by Hiphop Tamizha, and the storyline revolves around a seemingly gentle husband with a hidden violent side, promising to be a mass entertainer.
Additionally, he is collaborating with filmmaker Dhorai VZ on a horror-thriller that remains untitled, marking their third partnership after Iruttu (2019) and Thalainagaram 2 (2023). Dhorai was recently slated to direct Rajinikanth's 2027 film, tentatively named Thalaivar 173 (produced by Kamal Haasan), but stepped down from the project in November 2025 due to unforeseen circumstances. Sundar C and Rajinikanth last worked together on the successful 1997 film Arunachalam.
