Spider-Man Takes the Lead

Los Angeles: The latest installment, Spider-Man: Brand New Day, has outperformed the Avengers at the box office, achieving a remarkable USD 360 million in ticket sales during its opening weekend across North America, as reported by Sony Pictures.

Initially, Sony projected that Spider-Man would earn around USD 355 million from 4,487 theaters, just shy of the USD 357 million record set by Avengers: Endgame in 2019. However, the film starring Tom Holland experienced a surprisingly strong Sunday, ultimately surpassing expectations.

Tom Rothman, the chairman and CEO of Sony Pictures Motion Picture Group, expressed pride in this achievement, stating, "Records are meant to be broken, but we will cherish this one for as long as we can."

Prior to Avengers: Endgame, no film had ever crossed the USD 300 million mark in domestic openings. The previous record holders included Avengers: Infinity War with USD 257 million in 2018 and Star Wars: The Force Awakens at USD 247 million in 2015.

In December 2021, during the pandemic, the third Spider-Man film featuring Holland, No Way Home, debuted with USD 260 million and went on to gross USD 1.9 billion worldwide.

The successful launch of Spider-Man: Brand New Day, alongside The Odyssey, which also stars Holland, Zendaya, and Jon Bernthal, contributed to a record-breaking weekend for theaters in the US and Canada.

As per Rentrak, the domestic box office has seen a rise of over 15% compared to last year, with total earnings exceeding $6 billion.
