Known affectionately as 'Bai' among her peers, she was instrumental in transforming experimental theatre in India, dedicating decades to mentoring talent, directing groundbreaking productions, and influencing the careers of numerous celebrated actors.
Vijaya Mehta's Journey Ends at 91
According to reports, Vijaya Mehta's death was due to age-related complications. Born Vijaya Jaywant on November 4, 1934, in Baroda, Gujarat, she developed a love for theatre early in life. She graduated from the University of Mumbai and honed her acting skills under the guidance of notable theatre figures like Ibrahim Alkazi in Delhi and Adi Marzban in Mumbai.
Mehta emerged as a leading voice in the experimental and parallel theatre movement of the 1960s. She co-founded the theatre group Rangayan alongside renowned playwright Vijay Tendulkar and actors Dr. Shriram Lagoo and Arvind Deshpande. Under her direction, Rangayan became a hub for artistic innovation, inspiring countless theatre practitioners. Many acclaimed actors, including Anupam Kher, Nana Patekar, Vikram Gokhale, Neena Kulkarni, Bharati Achrekar, and Ashok Saraf, flourished under her mentorship.
While her heart belonged to theatre, Vijaya Mehta also made notable contributions to Indian cinema and television. She directed celebrated films like Raosaheb (1986) and Pestonjee (1988), and appeared in significant roles in films such as Party (1984) and Kalyug (1981).
Nana Patekar: A Protégé of Vijaya Mehta
Among the many artists influenced by Vijaya Mehta, actor Nana Patekar shares a particularly close relationship with her. She was pivotal in his early theatre career through the Rangayan group, directing him in acclaimed plays like Hamidabaichi Kothi.
Patekar has often referred to Vijaya Mehta as his ultimate mentor, crediting her teachings on character immersion, discipline, and performance for shaping his career. Their collaboration extended beyond theatre, as she produced the 1998 film Yugpurush, featuring Patekar in a leading role. Even in her later years, Vijaya Mehta maintained close ties with her students and colleagues, with Patekar frequently visiting her, including during her birthday celebration last November.
