Director Laxman Utekar is set to bring another captivating story from Maharashtra's vibrant history to the big screen. Following his previous work, Chhaava, which focused on Chhatrapati Sambhaji Maharaj, Utekar is now preparing to unveil the tale of Vithabai Bhau Mang Narayangaonkar in his upcoming film Eetha. The film stars Shraddha Kapoor in the lead role, alongside Randeep Hooda. The first teaser for this biopic was showcased exclusively before the screening of Cocktail 2, featuring Shahid Kapoor, Kriti Sanon, and Rashmika Mandanna. Historically, the performance was halted to allow Vithabai to rest after childbirth. To maintain authenticity, filming took place in various locations, including Madh Island in Mumbai, Solapur, Aundhewadi, Satara, Nashik, and Bhor. During the production, Shraddha suffered a fracture in her left foot while shooting a crucial lavani sequence.

Who Was Vithabai Narayangaonkar?

Vithabai was a renowned Tamasha performer from Maharashtra, significantly influencing the legacy of folk dance. Born into an artistic family in Pandharpur, she was part of the Bhau-Bapu Mang Narayangaonkar troupe, led by her father and uncle. Her grandfather, Narayan Khude, was a pioneer in this field. Vithabai was immersed in various musical forms, including Lavanya and Gavlan. Known as the ‘Tamasha Samradini’ (Tamasha Empress), she continued her family's legacy during challenging times. She received prestigious accolades, including the President’s Award in 1957 and 1990, yet faced financial difficulties, with her hospital expenses after her passing covered by generous donors.
