SS Rajamouli, a prominent figure in Indian cinema, continues to exhibit the enthusiasm of a novice filmmaker, according to actor Prithviraj Sukumaran. Currently involved in the production of Rajamouli's upcoming film Varanasi, Prithviraj shared insights into the director's extraordinary work ethic and passion for the craft. He noted that despite Rajamouli's status as a global icon with numerous blockbuster hits, he maintains the spirit of a first-time director eager to realize his dream project.


Prithviraj's Admiration for Rajamouli

In a conversation with a media outlet, Prithviraj elaborated on his experiences working alongside Rajamouli during the filming of Varanasi. He expressed that the director's energy on set is unparalleled. Rajamouli approaches each day of shooting with the same excitement and determination as someone directing their first film. Prithviraj remarked, "To an outsider, he appears to be a new director who has finally received the chance to create the film he has long desired after years of waiting." This mindset, according to Prithviraj, serves as a valuable lesson for anyone in the industry.



Having collaborated with many esteemed directors throughout his career in Malayalam, Tamil, and Hindi cinema, Prithviraj acknowledged that Rajamouli's commitment has profoundly impacted him. He stated, "I have never encountered a filmmaker as dedicated as he is."


A Day on the Varanasi Set

Prithviraj went on to describe a typical day during the filming of Varanasi, revealing that Rajamouli often arrives at the set several hours ahead of the cast and crew. Even when the first shot is scheduled for 7 am, the director is present as early as 5:15 am. By the time actors Mahesh Babu, Priyanka Chopra Jonas, and Prithviraj arrive, Rajamouli has already overseen the technical setup, rehearsed scenes multiple times with his team, and finalized every detail.



He recalled, "For the first shot at 7 am, by the time Mahesh, Priyanka, and I arrive, he would have set up the Jimmy Jib, conducted 12 rehearsals with his assistants, corrected everything, and be waiting for us." Prithviraj even inquired if he should come in earlier, but Rajamouli insisted that the actors adhere to their scheduled times. Additionally, Prithviraj noted that Rajamouli is typically the last to leave the set each day. His dedication is evident throughout the filming process, with lunch breaks lasting only about 20 minutes.


The film Varanasi is one of the largest Indian productions currently underway. This Telugu-language epic action drama features Mahesh Babu in the lead role, alongside Priyanka Chopra Jonas and Prithviraj Sukumaran in significant roles. While the plot details remain undisclosed, the project has generated considerable excitement due to Rajamouli's involvement, who previously directed global successes like Baahubali and RRR. Varanasi is set to hit theaters on April 7, 2027.
