Mumbai, August 1: Celebrated singer and composer Shankar Mahadevan has been selected to perform during India's handover segment at the closing ceremony of the Commonwealth Games 2026, scheduled for August 2 at Glasgow's OVO Hydro.
At this event, India will officially assume the hosting responsibilities for the 2030 Commonwealth Games, which are set to be held in Ahmedabad.
Expressing his enthusiasm for the upcoming performance, Mahadevan emphasized the profound sense of duty that comes with representing one's country on such a significant international platform.
He remarked, "Every time you represent India on an international stage, there is a deep sense of responsibility that comes with it."
Discussing the significance of the Commonwealth Games, he stated, "Events like these celebrate excellence, unity, and the shared human spirit, and music beautifully complements that."
Mahadevan added, "Our performance aims to encapsulate the diverse emotions, traditions, and musical influences that define India. I hope the audience not only enjoys the music but also feels the warmth, diversity, and essence of our nation through it."
The closing ceremony will feature a 20-minute segment dedicated to India's handover, showcasing a cultural presentation that includes Shankar Mahadevan, actress and former Miss World Manushi Chhillar, playback singer Bhoomi Trivedi, and musicians Siddharth and Shivam Mahadevan, along with sitar virtuoso Rishab Rikhiram Sharma.
This performance will pay homage to Gujarat, the host state for the 2030 Commonwealth Games. Shankar Mahadevan is expected to lead the performance alongside his sons, Siddharth and Shivam, with Bhoomi Trivedi also contributing as a Gujarati playback singer.
