Shabana Azmi's Call to Action

Renowned actress Shabana Azmi has made a heartfelt appeal for citizens to join a protest in Mumbai on October 2. Scheduled for 4 pm at Shivaji Park, this demonstration aims to highlight issues surrounding the integrity of voter lists and the safeguarding of democratic voting rights. Azmi, who recently took part in a protest in Delhi regarding irregularities in the NEET examinations, expressed her support for the Mumbai event through a video message shared on social media.

In her message, Azmi underscored the importance of the electoral process, characterizing voting as a fundamental right and a means for the public to express their voice. She raised concerns about the possibility of voter names being removed or altered, warning that such actions could hinder citizens' ability to engage in the democratic process. Azmi urged everyone to attend the gathering to advocate for the protection of their voting rights, stating, "I will see you there."

Background of the Mumbai Protest

Context of the Mumbai Protest and Allegations

The upcoming protest is part of a larger initiative led by the Cockroach Janta Party (CJP), founded by Abhijeet Dipke. This organization is calling for a nationwide movement, with the Mumbai event marking its launch. The CJP is demanding the resignation of Chief Election Commissioner Gyanesh Kumar and a halt to the 2025 electoral roll updates. Additionally, they are seeking greater transparency in the appointment process for future Election Commissioners.

According to the CJP, around 130 million voters were allegedly removed from the electoral rolls during the Special Intensive Revision (SIR) process. Dipke has suggested that these deletions may correlate with the vote-share margins seen in the 2024 Lok Sabha elections, claiming that such changes could significantly affect future electoral outcomes. It is crucial to note that these allegations are specific to the CJP and have not been substantiated against the Election Commission.

Challenges Ahead for the Protest

Official Stance and Planned Action

The planned protest has encountered administrative challenges, as the Mumbai Police have denied permission for the gathering at Shivaji Park. Authorities cited regulations regarding public assemblies and potential traffic disruptions as reasons for their decision. Despite this lack of official approval, the organizers have expressed their determination to move forward with the protest.

In her video message, Azmi recognized the difficulties in obtaining permission for the event but emphasized that questioning authority is a fundamental right. She encouraged the public to express their concerns about the electoral process, urging them to "come out of your homes" and join the demonstration to defend their democratic rights.
