Exploring the Creative Process of Satinder Sartaaj

Punjabi Sufi artist Satinder Sartaaj recently opened up about the behind-the-scenes stories of his hit tracks like Sai Ve and the popular Jaiye Sajana from Dhurandhar 2. He was the inaugural guest on the newly launched podcast Baatein Dil Se, hosted by Navika Kumar, the Editor-in-Chief of a prominent media group. During a relaxed conversation, Sartaaj discussed his straightforward approach to music-making, emphasizing that he focuses on his passion rather than the commercial success of his songs.

Creating Music from Home

Satinder Sartaaj makes songs at home

In the podcast, Sartaaj shared that early in his career, he recorded in studios like many musicians. However, his approach shifted after 2014. "Initially, I did do recordings in the studio. In fact, we recorded Sai in a studio. But after 2014, whichever song I've released, be it Rang or any other, I've created it by myself. I've dubbed all of them at home," he explained. He has established a small studio at his residence, which he affectionately calls 'Najamgah'. This space features a microphone that requires a 40-45 minute warm-up before he can start recording.

Releasing Music Without Looking Back

Not looking back after his songs release

Sartaaj revealed that he often sends out his songs without following up on their reception. "I just created Rang and sent it without following it up. People don't believe me when I say this. Even when the song with Tanishk (Bagchi) released, I was in Hyderabad for a show. He texted me, and that's when I found out the song had been shot and released. They think it's not possible. But it's true. I neither search for nor listen to my songs after they are out," he stated.

Finding Joy in Solitude

Alone and happy

While some may find Sartaaj's working style unconventional, he embraces it. The artist from Hoshiarpur, Punjab, expressed his preference for solitude, even in social settings. "When I'm alone, I'm happier," he shared. He elaborated, "I do enjoy my friends' company, but I like being alone. Even when I'm traveling, there's my driver, and I'm alone in my car. There's no music, no books, and I only observe things around me, the fields, the road... One must enjoy the journey of life."
